Microbial cell surfaces generally carry negative charges, which can adsorb positively charged ions onto the cell surface, therefore, the CO 3 2– transported from the inside the cell to its surface combines with the Ca 2+ in solution, resulting in calcium carbonate precipitation ( Fig. 3 b).
